The Ten Fetters: #1, Self View
Tonight by popular demand, the 10 Fetters:
Self-view (sakkāyadiṭṭhi)
Doubt (vicikicchā)
Belief that rites and rituals will liberate (sīlabbataparāmāsa)
Sense desire (kāmacchanda)
Ill-will (vyāpāda)
Craving for form (rūparāga)
Craving for the formless (arūparāga)
Conceit (māna)
Restlessness (uddhaccaṁ)
Ignorance (avijjā)
We'll start with the first three tonight, and mostly the first: self/personality view. Realization of the first three is one of the definitions of Stream-Entry (sotāpanna). Looking at the Fetters continues our conversation on Wise View, with each of these being painful features in our minds and nervous systems that we weaken and then fully release through the process of insight.
