Joanna Macy Becomes an Ancestor
Extraordinary Buddhist scholar, thinker, poet, translator, teacher, organizer, and grief alchemist Joanna Macy has died. She gave so much to our lineage and to the wider world, and with many of us, I'm reverent and grateful for her life in the Dhamma.
We delight in her legacy tonight, and I read from her and Anita Barrows' extraordinary translation of Rilke, which has been a precious volume for me for many years.
Poems read: Sonnets to Orpheus, poems 27 and 29; and Duino Elegies 1 and 9 from Joanna Macy and Anita Barrows, In Praise of Mortality: Selections from Rainer Maria Rilke's Duino Elegies and Sonnets to Orpheus (Riverhead, 2005).
