DESCRIPTION
The Buddha’s third discourse, given a few weeks after the Not-Self teaching that brought his 5 friends to liberation, used the theme of fire to lay out how grasping and suffering are so painful. He had just converted 1000 ascetics who had previously been practitioners of fire sacrifice, and so he pitches this teaching directly to them, reframing as usual the literal nature of their practice into a psychological and soteriological one: external to internal.
